Winter hiking in the Grossglockner/Heiligenblut adventure area

With winter boots or snowshoes - through the powder snow of Heiligenblut am Großglockner

Winter wonderland in the Hohe Tauern - hard to beat for romance. When the sun climbs higher in the morning and a bitterly cold night is replaced by a gloriously sunny winter's day, we set off to explore the winter landscape on the region's most beautiful winter hikes. We decide for ourselves, whether it's flat in the valley or alpine at up to 2,600 m above sea level.

Even whether we put on snowshoes depends solely on the route we choose. In Heiligenblut there are eight perfectly signposted winter hiking trails with detailed descriptions. We need snowshoes above all when we venture deeper into the Hohe Tauern National Park, the largest winter hiking area in the Eastern Alps. Adventurers, explorers and connoisseurs alike will get their money's worth.

Get started, enjoy, stop off

A winter hike is best started early in the day. The temperature in the sun is rising and the views of the mountains are getting better and better. There are up to eight winter hiking trails to enjoy to the full. The Kaiserin Elisabeth hike takes us to the Gipperalm, while the Schareck summit experience starts at an altitude of over 2,500 meters. In between, we opt for the Heiligenblut circular trail, the Fallbichl snow paradise, the Apriacher Almen circular trail and much more.
