Long-distance hiking in the Großglockner/Heiligenblut adventure area

From the glacier to the sea - long-distance hiking on the Alpe-Adria-Trail

Hiking without borders - from the 3,798 m high Grossglockner, across the federal state of Carinthia, Slovenia and Friuli-Venezia Giulia, to the coast of the Adriatic Sea. The destination is Muggia, a small harbor town just south of the city of Trieste. In between lies the sheer endless freedom of a long-distance hiking trail.

Start in the morning, walk alone or join up with others, take breaks, gaze into the distance and enjoy the beautiful natural surroundings. Rich in contrast, cross-border and passionately inspiring - step by step.

Satisfied longing on the Alpe-Adria-Trail

The long-distance hiking trail was launched in 2012 as a cooperation project between Kärnten Werbung in Austria, Slovenia Tourism and Italian Friuli-Venezia Giulia Tourism. A joint project with great scope. The realization of the Alpe-Adria-Trail was supported by the respective Alpine associations of the three countries Austria, Slovenia and Italy. They are also responsible for the maintenance work on the trails and for the signposting and are particularly distinguished in this respect.

The art of slow travel

We set off: in front of the Großglockner, we take our first steps on the Alpe Adria Trail on the edge of the Pasterzen glacier. The excitement and anticipation is palpable. On the sunny side of the Hohe Tauern National Park, we cross beautiful landscapes and marvel at tradition and history, such as the Apriacher Stockmühlen cultural monument. The highlight of the route through Slovenia is a hike along the emerald Soca River. After almost 750 km, we reach our destination on the Adriatic coast. A well-deserved cool-down on the beach at Duino awaits us.
