The pilgrimage church "St. Vincent"
It can be seen on almost every postcard of Heiligenblut am Großglockner. St. Vinzenz is rightly considered one of the most beautiful and famous churches in Austria. This is partly due to the world-famous postcard motif with the Großglockner in the background, but the church also houses the vial containing the "Holy Blood" of the Byzantine general Briccius. The legend of Briccius is depicted inside the church and is the main reason for many thousands of visitors every year.
The church is dedicated to St. Vincent of Saragossa and was first mentioned in 1253. In 1273, the first pilgrimage to the "Holy Blood" was mentioned and when it was decided to build a proper church in 1390, this was the start of almost a hundred years of construction. On November 1, 1491, the new pilgrimage church in Heiligenblut am Großglockner was opened and from then on was able to accommodate the increasing number of pilgrims, pilgrims and visitors.
